We Need to Talk About This Whole Capitalism Thing

Albert Einstein is purported to have said “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.” Of course, Einstein never met my mother during the holiday season. On one hand, I appreciate her persistence in wanting to get things just right to have a near perfect family Thanksgiving and/or Christmas. Her tenacity knows no bounds. But at some point, it just became way too much pressure despite the fact that it felt like something was always going wrong, like that one time during the holidays where literally everyone got sick except for my paternal step-grandfather.

The point I’m trying to make is that in this instance, the United States is like my parents; always trying to make the same thing work despite something always going wrong. This is especially true when it comes to the United States’s relationship status with capitalism, which I think many would agree be best described as “it’s complicated.” If you’d like to discover how complicated things are between the United States and Capitalism, well my friend, you are going to want to read this entire deep dive on medium though a link here, by clicking on the title or image.

I Prefer People Don't Know the Date of my Birthday

There’s a good reason why I don’t tell many people, not even co-workers or the parents of the Goddess the date in which my birthday falls. It’s not that I don’t enjoy birthdays anymore, it’s just, in many ways perhaps I’ve outgrown the trappings of what birthdays used to mean.

But in order to learn what birthdays meant and what they mean for me now, you will need to read the full article on Medium, which can be found by clicking here, on the image or title above.

5 Alternative Ways to Write Poetry

When it comes to writing poetry, the very idea often turns people off. In my experience, many people feel they are not creatively inclined to write poetry or because the thought of writing a poem is intimidating (or lame). I can understand and empathize.

Poetry itself is a nebulous and expansive term. Sure, one of Merriam Webster’s definitions of poetry is “writing that formulates a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience in language chosen and arranged to create a specific emotional response through meaning, sound, and rhythm.” But, that definition doesn’t entirely take into account the various forms poetry can take, like haikus, sonnets, triolets, kyrielles, free verse, prose, etc. Where to even begin??

Anyone following me on IG (@thebrycical) knows that I’ve explored various methods and styles of writing poetry over the years. And, because April is National Poetry Writing Month (#napowrimo), the time seems write(!) to share some of my favorite alternative methods to crafting a poem.

Dear Louis CK

I wrote a letter to Louis CK. Granted, I have no idea how to write a letter to someone like him. I say this because I acknowledge someone like me wouldn’t even register in his world. But, I wrote it anyway.

OG Daffy Duck is My Spirit Animal

I could go on and gush nostalgic about being fortunate enough to spend a great deal of my childhood weekends watching all kinds of cartoons, thanks in part to the Saturday morning Fox tribe at my parents house, then meeting up with the Warner Bros and Cartoon Network tribes later in the day at my grandparent’s house. They had cable. Later I would discover the much more adult themed tribes of HBO and Cinemax cartoons like Jack Off and the Beanstalk and I Married A Strange Person, playing in the wee hours of Sunday morning before going to church with my grandparents.

Despite the sheer amount of super heroics, insane siblings and scientific boy geniuses I crammed into my brain throughout childhood, there is one cartoon character that, to this very minute of this very day continues to rule them all; the OG Daffy Duck.

To understand how and why OG Daffy Duck is the my fave, you’ll either have to click on the title, or here to read the rest of the article on Medium.

Introspective Digestion

As I mentioned in my first blog post, part of why I’m writing about and sharing details of my past travels, dealings with family and what inspires me is because I’m trying to make sense of my life thus far, trying to understand what inspired to take the path of a writer/poet. However, I’m also discovering this endeavor is allowing me to dive deeply into myself and learn the recipe that makes me… well, me.

But, in order to do this, I’ve needed time to reflect. In order to find out how I found the time, you will need to check out the full story on Medium either through the link here, the title or the image.

My Girlfriend Changed the Way I Interact with People

There’s one reason I love my girlfriend, the goddess in particular, and it has to do with the fact of how, like the title suggests, she changed the way I interact with others, specifically in terms of how much of my energy, presence and attention I do give versus how much I should give to others.

To learn about how she did this, you will need to check it out on Medium either through the link here, the title or the image.

Tradition Kills My Holiday Spirit

I prefer spending the "Holiday Season" (including Thanksgiving in this) with friends over family. Probably not a shocker to those who know me. It’s also probably not a surprise to the majority of people in the U.S who feel some form of obligation to spend time eating dinner with Uncles and Grandparents that, if drunk enough (though not necessarily), will more than likely say something racist.

For a while now, I’ve been pondering why the "holiday season" irks me. To discover the depths of this irking, you gotta check out the post in its entirety over on Medium here or by clicking the title or the image.
