I struggled to not only to write this entry, but even finish it as well due to the continued grim news I’ve been reading. So instead of going all out. I’m just going to share the incomplete version and then take a break from this because… I just can’t keep going with all this mental stress.
The week began and looked to continue with some more encouraging news for San Antonio, as not only were there fewer reports of COVID-19 ER patients, but also the positivity rate dropped below 10%, giving health officials and leaders alike a sense of cautious optimism. Hooray? HOWEVER, it should be noted that while case numbers are falling, so too are the number of tests be administered, making it hard to tell the actual number of people who do have ‘the virus.’
To be safe though, San Antonio officials decided to close all parks over Labor Day weekend, since they probably remember what happened after the whole July 4th weekend.
Despite the numbers looking better, this week San Antonio was given the grim distinction of having the highest death rate among major Texas urban areas. This was evident as the week wore on by the fact tht a familiar pattern is beginning to emerge in San Antonio; that being while hospitalizations continue to decline, the number of deaths due to Coronavirus continue to climb.
The basketball bubble playoffs almost stopped this week, though not because of coronavirus, but because players were ready to walk out in protest over the shooting of Jacob Blake and the subsequent unrest happening in Wisconsin.
MLB and MLS cancelled games this week as well in a show of protest over the shooting.
The RNC definitely happened this week and people said things that didn’t necessarily jive with the truth. But those were only the speakers that weren’t pulled at the last minute due to lack of vetting. Does RNC stand for “Really, there’s No Coronavirus?” Asking for a friend.
This is on top of the fact that two women featured in a video an the RNC say they were tricked into into appearing on this video making it seem as though they supported Trump when they do not. And that is on top of another person who Trump pardoned on air refusing to endorse the president. So, there’s that.
This week a chaplain from one of San Antonio’s medical facilities created a device that allows family to see loved ones with COVID-19 in hospitals. Bless this innovative chaplain.
A new drive-in movie theater is expected to be erected in San Antonio soon as a way for folks to be able to go see movies safely. How beautiful.
This week saw Erika and I mighty tired by the end of it as both of us have had to awaken in the wee morning hours so that Erika could get up early and do some babysitting for her sister.
Got a last minute visit from one of the renters toward the end of the week, who were just checking to make sure things in the condo were doing alright.
The later half of the week also saw temperatures cranked up to over a hundred and uncomfortably humid. So, fun times.
Speaking of weather, the majority of Texas was sparred from a rather dangerous hurricane that made landfall midweek. So hooray for small blessings.
While not necessarily San Antonio news, thought it would be nice to share a story I found about two sisters who both survived he Flu of 1918 have also recently survived the coronavirus.
Unfortunately, the week ended in tragedy as it was announced that actor Chadwick Boseman lost his secret battle with colon cancer. Rest in power, but Wakanda forever.
